Fails!
Here is a list of some of the biggest fails, some are funny others painful!
1. First fail happened before we even left Canada on the bus from Calgary to Edmonton. Ashleigh decided to leave her brand new and expensive gloves on the bus for the next lucky person. Fail!
2. Buying a tube of meat in Akureyri, Iceland (we think it was ground lamb, pork, beef and maybe some other mysterious meat). The pasta sauce turned out horrible, took forever to make and was way too salty. We ate it nonetheless.
3. While in Barcelona, Spain Ashleigh clearly stated we had to get out of the metro at this particular stop. I decided to not listen to this comment and said the next one is ours. Well turned out I was wrong and we had to backtrack. Ashleigh's proud moment of telling me "I was right". John fails!
4. While riding bikes around Wissen, Germany, Ashleigh decided to make friends with the side walk and fell of a brand new mountain bike while catching the high sidewalk edge. It was painful at the time but a fail nonetheless.
5. On our train ride from Ingolstadt to Munich, Germany we got kicked out of the train in the middle of nowhere since our ticket was only valid from 9am onwards. It was 8.50am. The next train from this tiny station left an hour later. Not cool.
6. After hiking for a few hours towards the highest peak Pondrosa, in Andorra we reached a huge snow covered area that was asking for an avalanche to happen. We turned around a few hundred vertical meters short of the summit. A safe fail in our opinion.
7. When getting to Tanger, Morocco we were bombarded by taxi drivers as usual. Our mistake was not to negotiate the price before getting in, something we should have known better after spending a few weeks in Morocco. The driver was overcharging us when we arrived at the ferry port. It took some arguing and a strong will to hand him the few dirhams it should have cost and walk away. But not without getting called bad names and being spat after we got it our way.
8. While Air BnBing in Essaouri, Morrocco we somehow managed to jam the balcony sliding door. Instead of leaving it we tried so hard to open it that we broke off the handle. The owner did state it cost 90 euros to replace, but never asked for the money. (We have failed many times after this with Air BnB. Once breaking a glass and jamming another balcony door while in Croatia.)
9. While in Mostar, Bosnia & Hercegovina we failed twice at making coffee. Someone dumped salt into the sugar and the first time we were surprised by a disgusting coffee - no coffee the first morning. The second day, the worker who dumped the salt in said it was all good now. Instead of trying it, we put it in again and sure enough it was salty. No coffee the second day.
10. It took us three tries to exchange enough money for a train in Odessa, Ukraine. It was not our day and we ran around for 30mins before getting our tickets.

11. Not taking out money at the airport in Tanzania and going to the train station where cash is only accepted and no ATM was nearby
12. In Cairo we thought the hostel had a kitchen but it was just a gas stove tucked into a closet. We bought food already so we had to cook it. John had to use his headlamp and sweated buckets while he cooked our potatoes. We ate out after that. 13. Not checking the rented equipment before we went on our Kilimanjaro trek. Ashleigh's sleeping bag zipper was broken and both rain pants were completely torn apart by the end. Luckily we managed! 14. For our train ride to Zambia we thought the train left at 3:30 pm but the tickets said 10:10 am. We had our Air BnB host buy them for us and only figured this time change out after we booked our stay in Zanzibar. And of course we arrive at 9:00 am and the train was delayed until 4:00 pm 15. When requesting a transfer from the Bahrain airport to the hotel we wrote down we arrived at 8:30 pm, when we actually meant 8:30 am. We ended up having to take an expensive taxi ride to our hotel. 16. We went to the wrong terminal when leaving Kuwait. We were so happy about getting free transfers to and from the airport, we forgot to tell the driver which airline we were taking. Had to take a five minute, $20 cab ride to the correct terminal. 17. When Ashleigh went to unplug her charger from the outlet in the Manama hotel, there must have been a surge, because a huge spark came up and fried one adaptor. Luckily we had a second! 18. John accidentally put the wrong year of birth on his Electronic visa for Sri Lanka, so he had to pay for another one at the airport. 19. We had to do laundry so bad that we didn't realize the clothes wont dry fast in damp rainy conditions. We washed them, but we probably put too much in the washer that they didn't turn out very clean. 20. While on a hike in the pouring rain, Ashleigh was bit by a leech without realizing it until a big blood stain appeared on her pant leg. 21. Ashleigh jumping off the dock in Lake Toba but didn't jump far enough out to avoid the rocks. Her foot got a little beat up 22. John leaving his World Cup sweater on the Songthaew (truck tuk tuk) in Laos. We hope a local is staying warm. 23. Waiting almost 2 hours for a local bus to load on patio stones to transport them to northern Laos. We got off before they even finished loading because we knew the black smoking bus wasn't going to make it! |
